Jubilee Homes Celebration
Jubilee Homes celebrated its 16th year of ministry at the Church of Our Saviour on Sunday, June 24th, at the 8 and 10 a.m. services in the Church and at the 10 a.m. Mandarin service in Grace Chapel. Several of our current residents spoke at the services, sharing their experience, strength and hope.
And we have lots to celebrate at Jubilee, which is a fitting name for our enterprise. Over the years approximately 100 people each year graduate from our four sober living homes located at scattered sites in Pasadena and Altadena. They are adult men and women who are in recovery from addiction, and many are formerly homeless and/or incarcerated. It is a privilege for our dedicated staff to serve them and give them a fresh opportunity for a whole new way of life.
So we have graduated about 1,600 people over these 16 years, and most of them have maintained their clean and sober lifestyle and have flourished as a result. Many have re-established ties with their families and pursued careers.
Church of Our Saviour gave this ministry a spiritual base of operation 16 years ago. The Church took over the ownership of four homes, and a volunteer Advisory Board under the authority of the Vestry is responsible for their day-to-day operation. I work with four Resident Managers, one at each house, who work directly with our residents. Our homes are “transitional housing,” meaning that we serve people who are early in their recovery journey and help them take the next steps in their efforts at education, career and family. Ideally people stay with us for a year or two before they can afford to move on to more independent living.
One more reason to celebrate is that we have now paid off in full three of the four mortgages on the homes, and the fourth one will be fully paid next summer. This financial reality will give us the continued opportunity to upgrade our housing and to employ additional staff to enrich our ministry offering.
We are of course extremely grateful to the Church for its support, and for the prayer and financial support of many individuals as well. Jubilee Homes is an expression of our faith in God to empower and inspire our work.
