A REQUIEM MASS will be celebrated on All Saints’ Sunday, November 5 at the 10:00 am liturgy. The setting of the Requiem Latin text is by the French composer, Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924).

Once again on this morning, we will have a dual liturgy; All Saints’ and All Souls, “Rejoicing and Remembering”.  We will begin with an Introit: Justorum anime, words taken from the Book of Wisdom, Chapter 3, The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and the torment of malice shall not touch them; in the sight of the unwise they seemed to die, but there are in peace. The music setting is by the English composer, Charles Villiers Stanford. Then, we shall sing the entrance Hymn, “For all the saints who from their labor rest”, a music setting of Ralph Vaughan Williams.

We begin the liturgy with the Introit and Kyrie from the Requiem Mass. The Offertory anthem will be “Cantique de Jean Racine”. The text is a French translation, by the 17th century French dramatist Jean Racine, of a medieval Latin hymnConsors paterni luminis. When Gabriel Fauré set the translation to music, he gave it the title Cantique de Jean Racine, rather than the title of the original hymn.

O Word, equal of the Most High,
Our sole hope, eternal day of earth and the heavens,
We break the silence of the peaceful night.
Divine Saviour, cast Thine eyes upon us!

Shed the light of Thy mighty grace upon us.
Let all Hell flee at the sound of Thy voice.
Dispel the slumber of a languishing soul
That leads it to the forgetting of Thy laws!

O Christ, be favorable unto this faithful people
Now gathered to bless Thee.
Recieve the hymns it offers unto Thine immortal glory
And may it return laden with Thy gifts.

The setting of the Sanctus and Agnus Dei is set in the Eucharistic Prayer A. During this prayer we will name those who have died this past year. A Post Communion Meditation will be a setting of Pie Jesu (Beautiful Jesus). The service will conclude with the text from the funeral liturgy, In paradisum (Be thou in Paradise).

The orchestra and guest singers will assist us in this service of remembrance.  Please, if you would like, offer your gifts to the “Music for a Season”, and we will acknowledge your gift, if you so desire, in the liturgy.
